The BONENT Certified Hemodialysis Nurse (CHN) examination measures nursing proficiency in certain skills, tasks and general areas of knowledge in hemodialysis. The examination tests the following four major domains of practice and tasks performed in the scope of hemodialysis nursing: supervision/administration, dialysis and related issues, professional development and environmental control. This is a high level certification and requires applicants to have RN with valid license and one year of experience in an ESRD facility (copy of valid license).

Applicants must have an RN, LPN or LVN license.

Option 1:

Applicants with RN license should have one year of experience in nephrology and current active participation in End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) facility.

Option 2:

Applicants with LPN or LVN license should have two years experience in ESRD in a nursing capacity as verified by immediate supervisor or medical director.

The Certified Hemodialysis Nurse (CHN) credential has the following other requirements:

  • Applicants are required to submit two signed letters of reference with their applications. A signed letter will be required from their immediate supervisor. The other will be required from a professional (e.g., a peer or mentor) in the field of nephrology.
  • Applicants must be employed at the time of application submission.
